Native to tropical Asia but grown in numerous Far Eastern countries, benzoin has been used for thousands of years for its medicinal properties and for incense (thought to drive away evil spirits).  The resin is collected directly from the (7+ year old) tree and an absolute prepared through solvent extraction.  This is then dissolved in dipropylene glycol to produce an intensely aromatic mobile liquid.  This rich, intensely sweet, vanilla-like balsamic aroma is very useful for extending vanilla and is extensively used as a fixative.
